The game consists of three phases:

Placing phase: The players take it in turns to each place a piece on each of the nine intersection or corner points on the board.

Moving phase: The players move their pieces, i.e. during each round each player may move a piece to an adjacent unoccupied point. If a player is not able to move any of his pieces, he has lost the game.

Flying phase: Once a player only has three pieces left, he may “fly”(or jump) them, i.e. during each round he may “fly” his piece to any vacant point. If his opponent removes another of his pieces, he loses the game.

Three pieces of the same colour that are placed on three adjacent points in a line form a “mill”. If a player forms a mill, he may choose one of his opponent’s pieces and remove it from the game, provided that the piece is not part of a mill. According to the official tournament rules established in 2010, a player may remove one of his opponent’s pieces from a mill if all of the opponent’s pieces are in mills.
